Troubleshoot a device that shows a Wi-Fi connection but cannot reach the internet.
“Connected” means the device joined a Wi-Fi network; it does not prove the router has a working internet path. Start by checking scope: one site, one app, one device, all Wi-Fi devices, or the entire wired and wireless network. That single distinction prevents many unnecessary resets.
Classify the outage scope
Try two unrelated secure websites and, if safe, one other app. Test another device on the same Wi-Fi and the affected device on another known network. Check provider status through cellular data. Note modem and router lights without interpreting them from a different model’s guide.
Check common break points
- Correct Wi-Fi network and no unexpected duplicate name
- Captive portal completed on hotel, guest, school, or public network
- Airplane mode, VPN, proxy, private DNS, or security filter not blocking the path
- Device received a local network address and current time is correct
- Router has internet or WAN connection to modem or provider gateway
- Provider account, outage, cable, fiber terminal, or modem status appears normal
Use scope to choose the branch
| Scope | Start with | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| One website or app | Service status, browser, app, and DNS | Resetting the whole router |
| One device | Reconnect, restart device, VPN and network settings | Changing every household device |
| All devices | Gateway, modem, provider, cables, and outage | Deleting individual app data |
Restore connectivity carefully
- Confirm scope and provider status.
- Forget and rejoin only on the affected device if needed.
- Pause VPN or custom DNS briefly for a controlled test.
- Restart router and modem in manufacturer or provider order.
- Test wired connection where practical.
- Contact provider with timestamps, lights, and results.
Preserve configuration
- Factory-resetting a provider gateway without login details
- Changing DNS, IP, and router settings simultaneously
- Unplugging fiber connectors or damaged cables unnecessarily
- Following a random model’s light-code instructions
Record the failed layer
Note start time, affected devices and apps, Wi-Fi and wired results, provider status, gateway lights, captive portal, VPN or DNS state, restarts, cable changes, and restoration time. If the issue returns, the pattern helps distinguish equipment, provider, and local configuration.
